Unlive-blogging AI: Top 7 and Top 7.2

Yes, I know, I suck. I didn't liveblog either Top 7 shows, but I have really good excuses.

For the first show, I was at the in-laws, AKA Adam Lambert Fan Club, River City Chapter. We'd gone to dinner, and, by the time we got to my BIL's house, I'd missed the first two performances. Everyone else was just happy they'd arrived in time to hear Adam Lambert screech out "Born to be Wild." I distracted my two year-old nephew to keep him on the other side of the house with me, lest Adam's voice make his tiny ears bleed. I think there were notes that only dogs could hear. I was so dismayed that I married into a family that likes Adam Lambert, I didn't really pay much attention to the rest of the show.

(Side note to the in-laws: I love you guys, but, really, Adam?!)

This week, I had my trip to see my GI at UAB, and, by the time we got home and AI started, I was unconscious. I woke up just in time, you guessed it, to hear Adam sing. Lovely. :-/

I have a theory: only people who were not alive and sentient during the 70s are nostalgic for them. I remember the 70s, and they sucked. And the only things from the 70s that sucked more than disco: bellbottom pants, lines for gasoline, and Jimmy Carter as president.

(Side note to picky people: yes, I realize that you can't truly be nostalgic for something you haven't experienced, but I couldn't think of another word and watch the Braves game, too.)

Even though Adam destroyed the only disco song I actually like, that wasn't the outrage of the evening. The outrage? Randy Jackson saying that the top 7 was the best on AI ever. Seriously? Better than the top 7 that included Bo Bice and Carrie Underwood? I think last year's top seven was better, and I can only remember the two Davids. While no season breaks artistic ground (oh, good Lord, I sound like Kara now), this is the most boring top seven ever, dawg. Even my focus group at work agrees ;)

Next week's theme is Rat Pack standards. If you thought disco week was bad, this should be a hot mess. I'm not a Sinatra (*gasp* heresy!) or Sammy fan, but they better not defile a Dean Martin song, that's all I'm sayin'.

Liveblogging AI - Top 8

Hello all! Yes, yet again, I got the ejected contestant wrong last week. I thought for sure the Vote for the Worst guys would keep Megan around another week. But she did suck, after all.

The theme this week is songs from the years they were born, which means that, sadly, I'll remember when each and every song came out. There should be at least one complete train wreck, as well.

Vote for the Worst is picking their new "favorite" during the show, so I'll keep an eye on their site.

Did y'all see the weird guy from Fringe in the audience? My husband is so happy that show is back this week. They're showing baby pictures of the judges, and Kara looks like a whiny butt back then, too. They're starting with the oldest contestant, which is...

Danny Gokey, "Stand By Me" (Mickey Gilley, 1980)

Okay, Danny, you look weird without glasses. What's with the flat notes everywhere? A boring performance so far, although Paula is getting into it. The last repetition of the chorus was done with an R&B kind of feel, which improved the song tremendously. Randy said he made him like a bad arrangement. Kara said he killed it at the end and turned it on it's head. Paula said all she could say was wow but then preceeded to drone on about chord substitutions. Simon said the middle was lazy but the end was good.

(Somehow I don't think a free sandwich with a meal is going to get Denny's the same response as a free meal.)

Kris Allen, "All She Wants to Do Is Dance" (Don Henley, 1985)

Well, he definitely doesn't sound like the original, which I really don't like. I'd much rather listen to Kris' version. The arrangement was good, and Kris is always on key.  Kara said it was like jazz class homework, but Kara's an idiot. Paula said he did a good job of changing up a monotone song. Simon said it was indulgent and boring. Could someone get that man a thesaurus?! Randy said he was lost in the arrangement. Ryan said Simon's critique was indulgent and predictable!

Lil Rounds, "What's Love Got to Do with It?" (Tina Turner, 1984)

Lil's mother explains that Lil is short for Lily and Lil's actual given name. Lil has a bad habit of not enunciating her words, which makes the song sound muddy. Of course, about the time I got that sentence typed, she started singing more clearly. She sang okay, but the last big note was weak. Paula said she needed to lead the song instead of letting the band lead it. Lil doesn't look happy. Simon said it was a second or third rate version of Tina Turner. Randy said she isn't listening to the judges and Tina is not her. Kara said the "artist" word, again, and that Lil doesn't have a good lower register.

Oh, please tell me Ryan doesn't mean Anoop is going to sing True Colors!

(Hey, when was the last time Matthew McConaughey had a hit?)

Anoop Desai, "True Colors" (Cyndi Lauper, 1986)

Anoop started with an apology for sassing the judges last week, which makes me think his lovely parents gave him hell when they talked to him last week. I love this song, so he better not screw it up. He has a nice song and does well with ballads, and I like how he's singing this. He's giving it a slight R&B feel, which surprisingly fit the song. Oh, he ended it with the falsetto the judges like so much. Randy said that it was a very nice vocal. Kara said he controlled the song instead of letting it control him. Paula said it was beautiful and magical. Simon said he's a singing yo-yo, doing better this week than last, and gave him permission to talk back to the judges.

Anoop is back!!!

(The VISA aquarium commercial completely freaks out my husband. Looks like someone was on an acid trip when they came up with the concept.)

Scott MacIntyre, "The Search Is Over" (Survivor, 1985)

Scott breaks out the ax - who knew? He manages to pick the last song anyone would ever associate with 1985, though. Wow, he's getting screechy, too. You can't fault him for enthusiasm, but his voice is forever shaky. Kara said it wasn't his best peformance with moments that were over-ambitious. Paula, like Kara, gave him credit for playing guitar but said the high notes were screechy. Simon suggested he go back to the piano and said the song choice was bad. Randy said it was just okay and didn't show him as a star.

Allison Iraheta, "I Can't Make You Love Me" (Bonnie Raitt, 1992)

Now this is a great song choice! Not only is it a great song, it is perfect for Allison voice. It allows her to show a ballad side while still having a rock feel. She's doing a good job and, again, sings like she's wise beyond her years. Paula loved her tender approach to the song. Simon said it was very good but that she needs to be more likeable. He said her personality isn't coming across. Randy said she reminds him of Kelly Clarkson and agreed that she needs to show her personality. Kara said she could make a record of now.

(I wish AT&T's service was as good as their commercials.)

Matt Giraud, "Part Time Lover" (Stevie Wonder, 1985)

Geez, was everyone born in '85? I'm not a fan of this song at all, so he can't make it any worse. Looks like he took the judges advice to go to the R&B side. The arrangement is different than the original, and he even tried some scat singing in the middle. Randy said it was vocally one of the best of the night. Kara said it was unbelievable. Paula gave him a standing ovation. Simon said it was a million times better than last week. They must be running out of time since they all gave him one sentence advice. Or maybe they're just saving time for their favorite.

(Domino's pizza would be good for dinner...hmmm...)

Adam Lambert, "Mad World" (Tears for Fears, 1982)

Okay, I love my in-laws, but I still cannot believe they didn't think Adam was gay. I mean, come on! Of course, Vote for the Worse helped me burst their little Adam bubbles ;) I wonder how many people have even heard of this song (I have!). It's Emo Adam! And, not to disappoint, it is quickly followed by screechy Adam. I wonder if this is the first Tears for Fears song on AI. I like this song, and I'm still bored. Ending sucked. Simon gave him a standing ovation. Oh, please.

I've not been doing so well on my predictions, so maybe this is the week I get back on track. After all, there's sure to be a train wreck this week, right?  Of course, with Vote for the Worst pulling for Megan, who knows what could happen...

Oh, goodness, what has Allison done to her hair? And why are they all standing like robots? Like everyone else, I don't get the new judge introductions; they just look awkward walking out there. Oh, and SO SICK of hearing Kara talking about artistry. It's American Idol after all.

Anoop Desai, "Caught Up" (Usher)

Huh? I'm older than dirt, so I've never heard this song. Maybe he's doing well, I just don't know. I guess this is supposed to be Tough Anoop. I just think he sounds silly saying "homies." Randy said he picked up his swagger but isn't the right song for him. Kara said he played it safe and sounded like a frat guy. Paula said the vocals sounded really good but that he needs to work on his stage presence. Simon said it was a complete mess and that he came off as a wannabe.

Oh, good Lord in Heaven, Megan is going to sing BOB MARLEY!

Megan Joy Corkrey, "Turn Your Lights Down Low" (Bob Marley)

I hate to be hard on her, 'cause I like her personality. But geez, she was bad last week. Again with the hands, girl. Put. Them. Down. Okay, she's actually doing okay with this song, and it fits her quirky voice a lot better than the stuff she's picked lately. And my Plurk buddies will be glad she didn't do the creepy half twist this week. Kara said it was a bad song choice, but at least Kara isn't singing a song for her this week. Paula said she needs to take them by surprise and called her on the freaky movements. Simon said the song was boring, indulgent, and monotonous. Randy said it was like watching paint dry.

(The Beyonce movie looks beyond awful. And who's idea was the big URL across the top the entire commercial?)

Danny Gokey, "What Hurts the Most" (Rascal Flatts)

My husband just got home, and the beginning of this song stopped him in his tracks. I'm getting goosebumps. This is one of my favorite Rascal Flatts songs, and he did well. I think maybe the emotion of the song got to him. Paula said he did well and she'd definitely listen again. Simon said it was his best performance so far. Randy said tonight show really started with this song and he did really well. Kara said he moved everyone emotionally, and she got goosebumps, too. 

Allison Iraheta, "Don't Speak" (No Doubt)

Well, this explains the crazy hair and clothes. Allison is breaking out the guitar, too. Hey, did she just get the words wrong?! She's okay, I guess. Okay, what's the point of bringing out the guitar if you're only going to play five notes and then hold the thing? Randy said she rushed the band a little bit, but he mostly wants to know WTH she's wearing. Kara said she was dressing the part but that she was trying too hard. Paula thought the guitar added an edge but the rest of what she said made no sense. Simon said her outfit was something out of the Addams family and she shouted the song.

(I wonder how much bailout money went to making that Bank of America commercial...)

Scott MacIntyre, "Just the Way You Are" (Billy Joel)

Scott is going unplugged, just him and the piano. This is the best he's done is a few weeks, and his piano skills are on target tonight. His voice is still a little shaky, and who can blame him. Kara said it was a moving performance from an honest place. She loves the new look, too. Paula said he makes her forget that he faces challenges. Simon said it was his best performance by a country mile. He also likes the hair. Randy said he was one of the best tonight. BTW, the person that did Scott's hair should be beaten...a lot.

(Will the Fox April Fool's show involve everyone getting a bad net worm on their 'puters?)

Matt Giraud, "You Found Me" (The Fray)

Matt did not deserve to be in the bottom three last week, and, if believe Dial Idol, he wasn't. Oh, no, not a good start. He's off key, and his lower register just disappeared. This is not the song that's going to keep him out of the bottom three. He's mostly singing the same three words. Paula said he did not pick a song that showed off his strengths. Simon said he didn't get it at all and seemed like someone trying to be someone else. Randy said he picked the wrong song that didn't have enough soul. Kara said that he needs to stop going between the rock and R&B sides of pop but doesn't deserve to go home.

Lil Rounds, "I Surrender" (Celine Dion)

She looks very classy, but why did she pick this song? It sounds like something from Celine's Vegas act. Her big notes are going a little flat, and she's still coming off a shrieky. Randy said it wasn't a great song choice but she did it well. Kara said her performance was effortless and wowed her. Paula said she doesn't want to see an adult contemporary Lil Rounds. Simon said it was a safe choice that was old fashioned. Randy got a hug from Lil's daughter, who originally said she wanted to sock him.

Adam Lambert, "Play that Funky Music" (Wild Cherry)

One question: who's downloading this on iTunes?  Really, come on. OMG, I just realized who Adam looks like this week: Sylar on Heroes. What's he doing now, the Funky Chicken? Not a fan of the falsetto or whatever that is he does. Paula is salivating and said he was true genius. Yep, she's stoned out of her mind. Simon said it was brave and original. Randy said he worked it out and was in the star zone. Kara said it was like Studio 57. Um, yeah, that's Studio 54, dummy.

Kris Allen, "Ain't No Sunshine" (Lots of people)

This can be a great song, or it can be bad. And this ain't bad. I really like the string quartet accompanying him. The "and I know" bridge was very original, and the entire performance is great. I think the last note, however, was anti-climactitc. Randy said it was creative and cool. Kara can count words this week and said it was artistry. Paula said it could be his first single and was his best performance to date. Simon said he brought confidence and the arrangement was great.

Okay, if there's any justice in this world, Megan will be history. However, she still has the Vote for the Worst peeps in her corner, so, I think it will be:

Well, I missed most of the intro, but, come on, what could I have really missed so far? You know the drill: refresh after each singer :)

Matt Giraud, "Let's Get It On" (Marvin Gaye)

Oh, this should be good. I like the snazzy sweater and tie, and he's coming out from behind the piano, too. He's singing well, but not as a complete copy cat.  He did pretty well, although the backup singers were a bit off. Randy said he is a challenger for the top spot. Kara is being creepy flirty again and complimented him on coming out from behind the piano. Paula said he showed a sexy cool vibe. Simon said it was a cool performance and perfect song choice.

(One of the great things about the iPhone/iPod Touch would be CUT AND PASTE! Supposed to be in the next software version.)

Kris Allen, "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)" (Marvin Gaye)

Smokey's got the neatest laugh :)  Aw, Kris is doing his John Mayer impression again. And, without fail, the backup singers come in and mess things up. Kris has a good voice, and he delivers a solid performance. Kara said he did everything right. Paula said he has an infectious personality and made a great song choice. Simon said he needs swagger and confidence to go along with his good song choice. Randy said it's all good, baby. My husband says Kris just needs to come out strutting next week, just for laughs.

BTW, did anyone hear about Ryan, Simon, & Randy predicting the final 3 on Jay Leno? They picked Lil, Adam *blech*, and Danny.

Scott MacIntyre, "You Can't Hurry Love" (The Supremes)

Scott just told Paula to take her no-piano suggestion and shove it.  Well, not like that, but kinda. Not feeling the song choice myself, but my husband is impressed with the backup singers at the piano. He's dragging a bit, but he seems more alive going into the bridge. My husband says it's got his foot tapping, and he can't stop it. Paula said that there was more life to the performance this week. Simon said it wasn't a great version and completely the wrong song choice. Randy agrees with Simon and says it was a hotel kind of performance. Kara said he brought tempo, but she didn't completely like how he changed the melody.

Paula busted out some crayons and coloring books for Simon. Not sure why...

(As creepy as heads bursting into popcorn in the Coke commercial is, it still makes me want to eat popcorn.)

Megan Joy Corkrey, "For Once in My Life" (Stevie Wonder)

Smokey nailed it: Megan is half jazz, half cabaret! He said she is one of the most original contestants ever. Vote for the Worst is still pulling for Megan, but she's not terrible. She oversings some notes, and she needs her hands tied down to her sides. Oh, and my Plurk buddies think her half twist dance is freaky. She's screaming too many notes tonight, and the arrangement is completely overpowering her. I feel like I'm watching Ocean's Fourteen and a Half. Randy didn't feel it and said it was a train wreck. Kara is trying to show people she can sing again and said the song overpowered Megan. Paula said she's stunning, which means she didn't like the song. Simon said it was horrible and that she should fire whoever is giving her advice. And he said the arrangement was awful.

Anoop Desai, "Ooo Baby Baby" (Smokey Robinson and the Miracles)

Finally, a song by Smokey! Anoop is awesome, and I can't believe how well he's singing the higher notes. He's hitting the notes better than anyone else has so far tonight. I liked how he started out sitting on the stage and then got up. Kara said he did a pretty good job at a difficult song. She's nit picking, and I bet she doesn't call certain other singers on missing some notes. Paula said he has a new found confidence and a sweet, tender falsetto. Simon said it was a great vocal but that he was too serious while singing. Randy said it was good but he needs to "get the party on" next week. My husband said the judges keep giving conflicting advice. I wonder if he's ever paid attention before tonight ;)

Michael Sarver, "Ain't Too Proud To Beg" (The Temptations)

Smokey's telling Michael to bring it, so let's see what happens. Wow, where did his voice go on the high note? It kinda just disappeared. I think he's doing better than last week, and he's really getting into the song during the bridge. At the beginning, though, he was a little behind the beat, and I don't think the end sounded the way he attended. Paula said it was Las Vegas loungey (is that a word?). Is she crying? Simon said he was screaming and shouting the song and has no chance of winning. Randy said that song was too big for him and came off kind of corny. Kara broke out the "artistry" word again, saying he didn't have artistry. If she says Adam does, I may puke.

(Wow, Russell Crowe looks rough...kinda looks like I felt when I woke up this AM.)

Lil Rounds, "Heat Wave" (Martha and the Vandellas)

Oh, look at Lil! She got a 60s look going on. There wasn't a chance she was going wrong with this song choice, and she's doing pretty well. I think she's screaming a lot of the notes, though...or does my husband have the TV up too loud again? Either way, it's LOUD! Randy said it was the right kind of song and that she was rushing through the song. You know, he's got a point there. Kara also said it wasn't the right song and there was too much screaming. Paula said she looked unbelievable and owned the song. Simon said she did an authentic tribute to the sound of Motown but was the wrong song choice. He said if she picked a different song she could have had a moment

Adam Lambert, "Tracks of My Tears" (Smokey Robinson and the Miracles)

Who's he supposed to be this week? Elvis? Well, as much a I'm not an Adam fan, at least he's not screaming for a change. It's all an octave too high, though. I think my dogs were the only ones that heard that last note. Kara thinks he's an artist - TOLD YA! Paula said he's in his own league and noted he had no nail polish. Simon said it was the best performance tonight. Randy said he showed he can do anything. Even my husband thought it was good...turncoat!

Danny Gokey, "Get Ready" (The Temptations)

Uh oh, Danny didn't take Smokey's advice. Danny is singing well, though, and, for a change, the arrangement is very good. He's got a strong voice, and the performance was lively. Paula said it was great. Simon said it was clumsy and amateurish. Randy said it has great energy, if not his best performance. Kara said it was not great, but good. I hate when they start running out of time and don't give the singer decent feedback!

(Um, didn't they make this 17 Again movie two or three times in the 80s and 90s?)

Allison Iraheta, "Papa Was a Rolling Stone" (The Temptations)

I like how Smokey tells the background and meaning of the songs. Sing it Allison! This girl has got some soul and sounds wiser than her age. Love how she ended the song, too! Randy said it was blazing hot. Kara said it was amazing and her singing is from God. Paula has a drawn on mustache, which made Allison laugh. Simon said she is a survivor and it was her best performance yet.

So, who do I think will be history tomorrow? I've not been right much lately, but my prediction is:

Megan Joy

I mean, come on, she was AWFUL! The only thing that might save her is the Vote for the Worst voters. And, if Lil gets the least number of votes, the judges will just use their veto.

Liveblogging AI - Top 11

Hey, it's "Simon hates Country music" night! They really should just give him country week off.

I'm getting started late, but I'll catch up (that's the beauty of TiVo). Dinner with the hubby always trumps AI, but that doesn't mean I didn't watch in on Slingbox mobile on his phone all the way home.

I'll come back and add my Michael comments during a commercial break.  Refresh at will ;)

BTW, I LOVE country music. I (heart) Randy Travis, too.

Michael Sarver, "Ain't Goin' Down 'Til the Sun Comes Up" (Garth Brooks)

This is not the song I would have picked. It is chock full o' words, and, like Randy Travis said, it doesn't take much to get completely off course. While it was nice to see Michael have fun, it seems like he. was. just. dragging. along. Also, for country fans, this song is just too closely identified with Garth, and no one can sing it as well. Randy said it was a cool song choice for the fun factor, but it didn't show off his vocal abilities. Kara missed the big notes (that's 'cause he didn't sing them where they are in the original). Paula liked that it let us see him have fun and included a harmonica player. Simon didn't understand the words, comparing it to Norwegian, and said it was clumsy.

Allison Iraheta, "Blame in on Your Heart" (Patty Loveless)

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this song!  I think Allison is doing a good job with it, and she's not making it too cutesy at all. I like the country rock feel she gave the song, too. Kara said the performance was very solid, and Paula, as usual, parrots that assessment. Simon said it was good but thought she struggled to remember the words and was a little precocious. Randy said it was dope.

Kris Allen, "To Make You Feel My Love" (Garth Brooks)

Wow, that picture of him on the floor made him look rather...um...large. My husband sings this song to me, so Kris has big competition. Not as good as the hubby, but he's doing really well. Like Randy Travis said, he's doing a really good job of singing it in his own style instead of a Garth copy. Paula is surprised (has she not been listening to him so far?).  Simon said it was terrific and a smart choice of song. Randy said he took a chance to showcase his vocals, which showed he is a "tender dawg." Kara said she didn't know it was OPRYLAND.  Hey, dummy: Opryland is an amusement park!!

(I LOVE those Old Navy commercials - my husband thinks I'm insane.)

Lil Rounds, "Independence Day" (Martina McBride)

Lil says she wants to honor the original country artist by not trying to make the song into an R&B song. She's definitely not a country singer, but she's doing a good job. Looking forward to hear rip into the chorus, which can really show off her voice. Her voice is very strong going into the chorus, even if some of the notes are a little off. Randy called it an ambitious song choice and said it sounded like it wasn't comfortable for her. Kara agreed with Randy that the chorus was the strongest part of the performance. Paula said she was spot on but should have sang only one verse in order to get into the chorus sooner. Simon can't figure out what her name is, and he said she seemed like she was forced to sing something that made her uncomfortable. Why does everyone keep interrupting the judges tonight? Simon said she could have picked a better song.

(I don't get the Twilight thing. Then again, I'm about 25 years older than most of those girls.)

Adam Lambert, "Ring of Fire" (Johnny Cash)

Why does the thought of Adam singing country make me cringe? Middle Eastern Johnny Cash?! Even my husband looked up from his laptop and asked, "WTH?" Yuck. Sounds like Johnny Cash on LSD. 'Nuff said. Notice that Randy Travis' wife didn't clap? Kara said "Adam does country music." No, he didn't. Kara said it was strange, but she liked it. Paula salivated over him, as usual. Simon said, "What the hell was that?" Simon also recommended he not ever go to Nashvile and said it was horrific, self-indulgent rubbish. Randy said it was Nine Inch Nails does country.

(The Simpsons go to Ireland...LOL)

Scott MacIntyre, "Wild Angels" (Martina McBride)

Randy Travis doubted the song choice at first but became a believer, so who am I to question? He is doing okay, but he doesn't have the strength of vocals to really pull the song off.  Again, a little pitchy, so I'm wondering if his nerves are getting to him.  His piano playing is very good, as always. Paula said that, while he works harder than anyone, she's afraid the piano is becoming a crutch. Simon said that Paula's piano comment is stupid; Elton John always sat behind a piano. Simon said he still isn't choosing good enough songs. Again, the contestant is interrupting the judge. Shut up guys! Randy said he isn't giving them the "hot, crazy vocals" they're looking forward. Kara says they want him to up his game. Scott doesn't look happy.

Ryan said Alexis has been compared to Dolly...by who?! I think she may do a good job on this song. I was worried she was going to pick "I Will Always Love You," the most oversang song EVER. I'm glad she is singing it in a more modern style that suites her. I think she's the first one tonight to actually have some emotion while she's singing. Randy said she was too pitchy and wasn't great. Kara said she lost her edge. Why, because she didn't dress like a streetwalker this week? Paula liked that she showed a softer, more vulnerable side. Simon said it was okay but sounded too much like the original. Will they quit telling her to dirty it up?  Geez...

(The E-trade baby is probably just as good at managing my 401k as the broker.)

Danny Gokey,"Jesus Take the Wheel" (Carrie Underwood)

Randy Travis made Danny nervous...stupid nervous. If I were him, I'd be nervous about picking Carrie Underwood's worst song. Yes, I said it: I don't like this song. I give him props for singing a religious-themed song, when others have not gotten a good reaction for the same. Danny is doing well, and you can see the worship singer come out in him. The backup singers are killing him with their off key backing, though. Kara said that the first part of the song was not good, but the chorus was strong. Paula said she thought the build up was good. Simon agreed with Paula (SHOCKER!) but hates what he's wearing. (The first thing my husband said: "What's up with the coat?") Randy agrees with Kara, dawg.

Anoop Desai,"Always on My Mind" (Willie Nelson)

OMG, Anoop is taller than Randy Travis! Wow, high praise from Randy, too. Anoop the torch singer, who'da thunk it? I knew there was a great voice in there! I like that he didn't sing it as a Willie-clone. Very good, very good. And the girls holla! Paula liked the song choice and said it fit him like a glove. Simon said he went from zero to hero. Randy said he really showed his vocal skills and gave props to the band. Kara said the performance was amazing and the best tonight!

(I definitely want to see "I Love You, Man." My husband will be thrilled when "Fringe" is back.)

Megan Joy Corkrey, "Walkin' After Midnight" (Patsy Cline)

My theory of the evening is Megan can't possibly pick a worse song than last week. I think she could do a lot with this song with her unusual voice. Oh, no, she's camping it up too much. Just sing, girl. Someone needs to tie her hands to her sides. She's got a good voice, and she doesn't need to do that. Randy liked it and said she did it in a good style. Kara said she did a good job and was strong to sing through her illness. Paula mentioned that Megan was in the hospital with the flu and commended her for singing so well. Simon said she did well but didn't like her styling clothes-wise. Poor girl coughed through the entire judging.  I'm amazed she didn't cough during the song!

(I didn't think "Lie To Me" would be good, but it's actually not that bad.)

Matt Giraud, "So Small" (Carrie Underwood)

What's it with the guys singing Carrie Underwood songs tonight? Matt is singing with the piano, which always make his singing seem more personal. Matt has a great voice, and he's singing this song with a lot of emotion and depth. His build up to the bridge was very good, too. His soft, almost off-key ending was perfect. Kara said he is a true talent and amazing. Paula said he is an authentic performer and has an honesty delivery. Simon said he hasn't gotten enough credit for his vocals and remind him of Michael Bublé. Randy said it was his favorite vocals of the night.

Oh, my, it will be hard to predict the one going home this week, but do it I must.  My prediction is:

I hate to say it, though.  I think Adam was horrible, and Allison, Lil, and Megan will be low in votes. However, the judges will absolutely use their veto if Adam or Lil are at risk of being kicked off.  Especially if this story is true:

Liveblogging AI - Top 13

Here we are, the first week of the American Idol finals. Not only is a top 13 a first, it's created an interesting problem for anyone voting for the last singer. As the linked article says, it will be interesting if the perceived producers' favorites will be in any spot but the last.

I'll start blogging with the first singer, husband-crafted sandwich in one hand ;)  Refresh after the judging to see the latest.

BTW, did you know the new kiss-of-death song is a remake of Motley Crue's "Home Sweet Home" by Carrie Underwood?!

Simon is telling people not to forget the words, which pretty much ensures that someone will.

Tonight's twist: Because the top group is one person heavy, two people are being sent home tomorrow. Kinda saw that coming, didn't you?

Tonight's theme: Michael Jackson songs. What a nightmare...let's get started.

Lil Rounds, "The Way You Make Me Feel"

If anyone in this group wouldn't sound completely ridiculous tonight, it would be Lil Rounds. I think she has a great voice and attitude, but what is that on her shoulder? The others may have trouble matching her tonight. Randy says she gave it an old-soul vibe. Kara is wearing a worst shirt than Lil, if that's possible. Did Kara just say "dawg"?! Paula, of course, complimented the clothes first. Simon thought it was good but a lazy song choice. He hates what she's wearing, too.

Scott MacIntyre, "Keep the Faith"

Yay, Scott's playing the piano! He seems much more comfortable behind the piano and is singing better than last week. A little off key here and there, though, and he's likely to get criticized for choosing a song most people don't know. The ending was a bit odd, too. Kara mentions that Scott just learned that on piano this week and actually complements that he chose a less-popular song. Paula said it was lovely. The composer of the song gives Scott props from the audience. Simon hated the song because nobody knows it, and he said there isn't room for being artistic on AI. *hee hee* Randy said the performance was too safe.

(My husband wants to see the new Nicholas Cage movie but is afraid that it will freak me out too much. I'm a bit of a fatalist, you see...)

Danny Gokey, "PYT"

Backup singers = bad. Danny is really getting the crowd into it, even if it seems he's yelling most of the song. Again, though, another song with a small number of words sung over and over again.  Wonder how long they'll keep letting him wearing the glasses? He made Paula cry, and she predicted he will be in the finals. Simon thought the vocals were brilliant and the dancing hideous. Randy said it was passionate, and Kara said it was joyous.

BTW, there's been some controversy about how much Danny mentioned his deceased wife. Notice he did not mention her tonight.

Michael Sarver, "Not Alone"

Michael seems like a really good guy, and he's got a pretty nice voice. He's a bit off key in places, but the crowd loves him. He picked a good song for him, and the last note was very strong. Simon said he's not the best singer but makes up for it with passion and heart. Randy said he was glad he did an R&B take on the song, and Kara said tonight proves he's a singer. Paula said he picked an instinctually good song for him.

Jasmine Murray, "I'll Be There"

Jasmine is another one with a good voice, but she doesn't pick the best songs. Since he's a teenager, she usually gets the "song is too old" comment, and probably will tonight, too. She was a little pitchy, too. Randy said she wasn't that bad (is that a compliment?). Kara said she sang it in too high a key. Paula said there were some pitchy moments. Simon said it was a good attempt but a little robotic. Oh, there it is, the "song is too old" comment!

(Hubby made dinner - turkey sandwich, small spinach salad, and gnoochi. Very yummy.)

Kris Allen, "Remember the Time"

Kris broke out the guitar, and I think he's totally underrated. Still doing too much of the John-Mayer's-little-brother thing, but he does have a good voice. Oh, no, he's going off key. At least the last night was good. Kara says the girls love him, and she likes that he played guitar. She also mentioned that he helped the other contestants all week. Paula said no one knows MJ's catalog better than Kris then immediately objectified him sexually. Simon said the vocals were okay, but the guitar was a little clumsy. Randy compared him to Jason Mraz.

Allison Iraheta, "Give in to Me"

Allison is the resident rocker on the show (no, Adam does NOT count), and she's rocking out the song. The bridge was a bit off key, but I couldn't tell if it was her or the backup singers. She definitely didn't sing like anyone else so far. Paula said she's a rock star and has great hair. Simon thought it was a very good performance but that she should lighten up a little. Randy said she's just got it. Kara said she should keep being a rocker.

(Don't get the shoe infatuation, DWS or otherwise. I guess I didn't get that sex-linked gene.)

Anoop Desai, "Beat It"

All the girls holla for Anoop! ;) You gotta like a guy that says "y'all," and his parents are so cool! Has he picked the right song, though? He's trying to look a little tough, but he's singing well. His voice cracked a little, but my husband thinks he did well. Paula said the song is untouchable and shouldn't have been chosen. Simon said it was horrible and lightweight. Randy also criticized the song choice. Kara said the biggest problem was the song didn't show his strength. I hope someone else does really badly.

Jorge Nuñez, "Never Can Say Goodbye"

Jorge is okay, I guess, but I don't think this was a good song choice. Was he even alive when this song was originally released? It sounds very dated, and he was a little off key in the middle. I will scream if they criticize his accent, though. Randy said the song was too old fashioned. Kara didn't like the song choice, and neither does Paula. When Paula asked him why he sang this song, he couldn't explain his reasoning well. Simon said it was corny and that the arrangement was awful.

P.S., the song was released in 1971, approximately 18 years before Jorge's birth.

Megan Joy Corkrey, "Rockin' Robin"

Oh, goodness, Megan, why did you pick this song?! She's doing a jazzy take on it, but it's still a silly little song. (Yeah, it's a classic, so shoot me!) I want to kill the flute player, and I played flute for years. Was that a bird call?! Kara said it was "so Megan." Paula likes the quirky, unique tone of her voice, but the song didn't show them. Simon said it was a stupid song choice and clumsy, awkward performance. Randy said the song choice didn't allow her to be Megan. They then asked Gordon Ramsey, who was in the audience. He didn't have a mic, so I don't have a clue what he said.

Word of the night: clumsy.

Adam Lambert, "Black and White"

I don't like Adam, and I hate this song. Anything else I'd say would be completely biased, so why bother? The crowd went nuts. Paula said Adam is the most comfortable contestant ever on AI. (WTH is that bracelet?) Simon said it was a totally different league than everyone else and had terrific vocals. Randy said he is the most current and "right now" contestant. Kara said he hit notes she didn't know existed.

So, who ends up with the #13 slot of death? Poor Alexis :(

Matt Giraud, "Human Nature"

I think this is probably the only Michael Jackson song I like, and it sounds more current than the most of the songs people are singing tonight. Matt is doing very well, and his version doesn't sounds like a copy of the original. Sounds kinda cool, actually. Did I just say that about an MJ song? Randy said it was a really good performance. Kara said he is talented, and Paula agrees, adding sexy to the list. Simon said it was a solid, meat-and-potatoes performance.

Alexis has a very good voice, but I can't help looking at her and wishing she didn't feel like she had to dress like a streetwalker to win. OMG, I'm turning into my mother! Again, another rocking woman who is really good! The ending a little odd, but otherwise great. Kara said it was fantastic, and Paula said she oversang a little. Simon said it was over the top, and Randy said it was good. Her number is 1-866-idols-36; wonder how many people will screw up and dial the sex line.

Apparently, there's a rule change involving the judges they will announce tomorrow night. Who thinks they're going to let the judges overrule the public if their favorites get voted off? Change the rules to be more like Dancing with the Stars?

Liveblogging AI - Wild Card Round

Well, looks like I'm batting 1.000 - hopefully I can keep my prediction streak alive during tonight's wild card round.  Not sure how the judging is going to go, so I may not get much time to make my picks.

I was plurking with some buddies last night during the results show, and we all pretty much agree that the picks of Tatiana and Von are puzzling.  On the other hand, we were all happy that Anoop was picked to perform tonight.  I've got my fingers crossed for him.

Well, you know the drill: once the show starts, reload every few minutes to get the updates. Yeah, I'm high tech like that.

Jesse Langseth, "Tell Me Something Good" (Rufus & Chaka Khan)

Why do singers insist on picking songs with low notes when they have a weak lower register? Her lower notes are SHAKY at best, and her higher notes are a little shrieky. Blech. Randy said she didn't sing it that well. Kara ignores the bad singing because Jesse has a swagger, and Paula said she has soul. Simon said it was a lot better than her first appearance but slightly indulgent. Amazingly, Randy is the only one that can hear tonight.

Matt Giraud, "Who's Loving You" (Jackson Five)

Matt is pretty good, and this song is better than his last performance. He's got a good range, and he is very soulful sounding. Strange ending though, and he didn't actually sing very many words. Kara said he was a little over the top at times, and Paula tells him to stay in genre. Simon said it was a billion times better than last but compares him to Taylor Hicks.

Megan Joy Corkrey, "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" (KT Tunstall)

I really like Megan, but she's rushing the lyrics. And she keeps trailing off at the end of the line.  The musical arrangement is not that great either. All I can keep thinking is that Katherine McPhee sang it better...and I'm not a Katherine fan. Paula said she picked the right song. Simon said he likes her and doesn't care that she didn't sing well. Why isn't anyone saying anything about how she sang?

Von Smith, "Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word" (Elton John)

Oh, Lord. The beginning was a little weak, and he's making those wierd facial expressions again. Last note was good, though *shrugging* Simon said it didn't start well and that Von is boring. Randy called him on the weak start, too. Everyone thinks he's overly dark and serious. Paula misses the pure essence of Von Smith, whatever that is.

(That State Farm song is catchy; maybe someone will sing that.)

Jasmine Murray, "Reflection" (Christina Aguilera)

Come on, Jasmine! I hope she sings better than last time. She's doing a great job, but she's risking being called too serious or not young enough *grrr* She's picked the perfect song for her voice, and she seems very confident. Randy said the song was too big for her but better. Why are they criticizing her notes when they pretty much gave Megan a pass. Simon says they aren't giving her enough credit and called the song choice brave.

Ricky Braddy, "Superstition" (Stevie Wonder)

Why do they keep picking Stevie Wonder songs when the judges hate that?! He's rushing the lyrics a little, and the song just doesn't suit him. He's got a good voice, though. Kara and Paula said he was really loosened up. Simon called it karaoke-like and clumsy. Randy said the song was not a good choice. Really?

Tatiana Nicole Del Toro, "Saving All My Love for You" (Whitney Houston)

Good night, what a nut! And of course the prohibition against singing Whitney doesn't apply to her! She's singing in such an overwrought style, which makes taking her seriously difficult. She has a good voice, but she's such a drama queen. Is she high? She confused Paula, which isn't that hard. Simon said she's sang this song three times now. Randy basically called her schizo, and Kara said she has multiple personalities.

Anoop Desai, "My Prerogative" (Bobby Brown)

I love me some Anoop, and he can sing the same song twenty times if he wants. He started off a little shaky, but he's getting into it. Love the long note! All the girls holla for Anoop! Simon said he has lots of personality, and Randy said he did better than the last time he sang it. Kara said she wanted to dance. Paula said he's a showman with some nasty moves, and she agreed he sang it better than the last time.

Finally, the last week of the top 36!  So far, I'm doing well picking the finalists, so let's see if I can get the last three right, too.  I'm pretty sure the theme is Billboard Hot 100 again, so there should be at least a few really bad choices.  After two weeks of watching the others get ripped a new one, you'd think they'd learn, though.

Von Smith, "You're all I Need to Get By" (Marvin Gaye)

Well, no, they haven't learned not to pick songs by legends. He's on key and not screaming, but he's just kinda there. Not interesting at all.  And what's up with the wierd facial expressions?  Very odd.  Randy likes it, but maybe he's just lowered his expectations. Kara and Paula like him as well. Simon says he looks awful but sounds good.

Taylor Vaifanua, "If I Ain't Got You" (Alicia Keyes)

She was in the kickin' group during Hollywood week, and she looks a lot older than 17. The verse was muddled, but on key. The chorus is much stronger, and she sounds good. WTH is Kara talking about?! Who cares what it's like to go shopping with Taylor? Thank you Simon for calling Kara out on a stupid remark. Simon said Taylor was generic and forgettable.

(The Geico commercials just make me wish that actor still played the president on 24.)

Alex Wagner-Trugman, "I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues" (Elton John)

Okay, if this guy isn't a fellow geek, my geekdar is dead! He's such a cutie :) I like him, even it does sound like he's trying to clear his throat. I think I have to vote for him just on principle.  Paula says he's entertaining, and Simon said it was like a hamster trying to be a tiger. Randy said he was buck wild (huh?).  Alex said he was trying to have fun because sometimes we forget how to do that.  Yep, I'm voting for him.

Arianna Afsar, "The Winner Takes It All" (ABBA)

It's the first ABBA song on AI! I liked Arianna in the auditions, so I hope she does well. I bet they tell her the song is "too old" for her. Okay, she's got a pretty voice, but what's with all the riffs?  She doesn't seems to understand the emotion the song is trying to convey, either.  See Meryl Streep in Mamma Mia (I can't believe I just said that). Simon got in on the nose saying it was a bad performance. Randy and Kara broke out the "too old" comment...which is getting old.

Oh, no, I think someone may ruin one of my favorite songs soon...

(Hey, it's the Apple commercial that finally convinced me to buy the iPod Touch, which is that good.)

Ju'Not Joyner, "Hey There Delilah" (Plain White T's)

I love love love love love this song, so I hope he doesn't screw it up. I don't like his rendition at all, but I bet the judges like it.  He makes it sound almost depressing! Randy and Kara like it (told ya'), and so does Paula. *blech* Simon said it was better than he thought it would be. I will say it was better than the rendition that Danny's friend sang during Hollywood week.  Okay, I'll admit it, I don't like any version except the original.

(I may have to go to Olive Garden to have the Tuscan garlic chicken. *hungry*)

Kristen McNamara, "Give Me One Reason" (Tracy Chapman)

Another song I really like, and I like Kristen's voice a lot. Not positive they're the perfect match, though. Sounds a little Vegas-y, if you ask me. Or maybe like a 70s variety show.  Oh, no, I agree with Kara! *palm to the forehead* Simon complimented her voice, but he doesn't think she knows who she is. (Maybe she has amnesia?)

Nathaniel Marshall, "I Would Do Anything for Love" (Meatloaf)

Who wants to bet on how long it takes him to cry? And what is that thing on his head? I can't believe he chose this song; he doesn't have the strength in his voice to carry it off.  He's on key, and he's not horrible. Again, it's a problem with choosing a song that doesn't fit your voice. Simon said it verged on excruciating and compared the headband to Olivia Newton-John. Randy can't decide what kind of record he'd make.  Come on, dude, he's totally a dance artist.

(My husband is mumbling something about a rat's nest of cables. He stopped as soon as the Watchmen commercial came on.)
 
Felicia Barton, "No One" (Alicia Keyes)

She's the one that replaced the chick that got kicked off for having a close relationship with some Idol producers.  Why was she ever kicked off?  She's awesome! She's definitely kicking some butt to prove a point.  Simon says it was a bit copycat but not bad. Randy, Paula, and Kara all liked her.

Scott MacIntyre, "Mandolin Rain" (Bruce Hornsby)

How can you not like Scott? I'm definitely rooting for him, and he's picked a song that's right up his alley.  He seems a bit nervous, but, as he goes he gets more into it. He ended on a very strong note, too.  Randy says he can feel his passion for music, and Kara says it's coming from his heart.  Simon wasn't crazy about the song, but Scott is growing on him.  Simon says he'd be amazed if Scott doesn't sail through to the next round.

(What's up with all the food commercials when I haven't had dinner?!)

Kendall Beard, "This One's For the Girls" (Martina McBride)

Martina has a huge range, and her songs are usually pretty difficult. Kendall's doing pretty well, but she's having some problems with the highest notes. She got a little screechy at the end, too. She's definitely a country singer, so I'm glad she picked a country song. Kara said she had some trouble with the notes, and Simon said it got "shrilly" towards the end. Randy also said she had trouble hitting the notes.

Jorge Nuñez, "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me" (Elton John)

Jorge has a good voice, and, surprisingly, he's doing a very good job on this song. I think he's making a big effort not to sing with an accent, which I don't think is necessary.  Simon says he's a very good singer and shouldn't try to get rid of the accent. Randy said it was really, really good, and Kara said he was born to sing. Oh, goodness, he's crying. I think he's been hanging around Nathaniel too much.

(Hubby wants to see Haunting in Connecticut. Never could understand liking horror movies.)

Lil Rounds, "Be Without You" (Mary J. Blige)

I really liked Lil from the Hollywood round, and she is probably the strongest female singer in the competition this year. She picked a perfect song for her voice, and she's doing a wonderful job.  Simon says she's brilliant. Kara calls her a powerhouse, and Paula says she is first class.

Jasmine Murray, "Love Song" (Sara Barailles)

Her lower register is awfully quiet, and the song doesn't really suit her.  I think she has one of the better voices on the women's side, but it was a weak start for her and the show. The judges agree it was iffy, too. Simon just got his first boo for agreeing with the other judges.

(Did anyone hear about Paula's interview when she said the 4th judge thing isn't working? She said it takes too long to get the extra feedback and interrupts the flow of the show.)

Matt Giraud, "Viva La Vida" (Coldplay)

This is one of the guys I don't remember seeing before. Is this the first Coldplay song on AI?  His voice is pretty shaky, and the falsetto isn't good.  Why do people insist on doing something new when it never works out?  Not good, not good at all.  Simon is agreeing again and getting booed again.  Based on the compliments he's gotten about his auditions, he may be a wild card.

Jeanine Vailes, "This Love" (Maroon 5)

Another one I don't remember. She's very pretty, though, so I'm surprised they didn't spend more time on her.  Second most common mistake made by contestants: singing their favorite songs. I love Maroon 5 and sing this in the car, but I wouldn't sing it in public!  She started out very off key, and now she's screaming. WTH?! I'm starting to miss Tatiana.  Simon called it painful, an effort, and a struggle.  All the judges can at least seem to agree she has great legs.  Kara called it overdone, and she's so right.

Nick Mitchell, "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" (Dreamgirls)

Oh, no, not the goofy guy schtick again. I think he probably has a good voice in there somewhere, though.  He's changing the lyrics to beg to stay on the show.  And is he getting more time than the others, or is it my imagination?  I guess this is "Last Comic Standing" now. Simon is praying he doesn't go through to the next round. Why he's not the Vote for the Worst choice is beyond me.

He is funny, though :)  But wouldn't you be pissed if you were a contestant taking this seriously and got kicked off while he stayed?

Allison Iraheta, "Alone" (Heart)

Worst pre-song interview since Jason Castro, but hopefully she will sing better.  Hey, a girl with a decent low register - who da thunk?  This girl can rock!  Very good performance, best of the night so far. Randy said she "blew it out da box," whatever that means. Simon likes her and says the competition started just now. He called her out on the bad interview, though :)

Kris Allen, "Man in the Mirror" (Michael Jackson)

John Mayer Lite is singing MJ.  Didn't he watch last week's show when they blasted the guy for singing MJ? He's got a really good voice, and a touchy-feely song is always a safe choice.  Maybe he can get away with the MJ thing after all. Well, maybe not. Kara says it was a bad song choice.

STOP THE PRESSES!! Paula disagreed with Kara!! And Simon agrees!! Kris may survive to sing another day.

Megan Corkrey, "Put Your Records On" (Corinne Bailey Rae)

Oh, I liked her a lot from the auditions. She seems very genuine.  This song is the perfect style for her. She isn't singing it with much soul, but I think she is doing well.  Ended very strongly.  Paula said she did everything right.  Simon called her a funny little thing but thought she oversang the end. Oh, goodness, Randy compared her to Amy Winehouse.  Hopefully she won't be too much like her.

Matt Breitzke, "If You Could Only See" (Tonic)

Like a roughneck, you have to respect a welder. That's some hard work. I LOVE this song!! Sing it Matt! (Just don't dance *grin*) I think he's a little too subdued, but he's on key and getting the words right.  Simon hates the song, but what does he know?  It's not the song, it was Matt's delivery.  Randy agrees with me, as well he should.

Jesse Langseth, "Bette Davis Eyes" (Kim Carnes)

She's another one I liked from the auditions, but I'm not crazy about this song choice at all. She's singing it okay, I guess. Maybe everyone else is too young to remember the original and they won't criticize her for it.  The song is just too subdued for a first round performance.  Randy says the song doesn't show who she is.  Paula is right, she does have a unique voice, but she won't get votes, I'm afraid.

BTW, the original was released in 1981, about 6 years earlier than I thought.  I was 12.

Kai Kalama, "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted" (Jimmy Ruffin)

I like Kai's voice a lot, and this song shows it off a little.  He ended well, even if he had a few shaky notes (likely due to nerves).  Afraid they'll knock him for singing an old song.  As if on cue, Kara knocks him for singing an old song.  Simon called him corny and compared it to a wedding singer.  They do have a point, though.  Will teenagers vote for someone who sings songs released before their parents were likely born?

Mishavonna Henson, "Drops of Jupiter" (Train)

Mishavonna was cut during Hollywood week last season. I love me some Train, so she better not mess it up.  I like it, so she gets to live ;)  Her "ay ay ay" is a bit annoying, however her "nah nah nah" is much better.  Please ax the gaze into the camera!  Paula doesn't like the song, but Simon says it's too serious and left him cold.  I think they're being way too hard on her.  And the infamous "sing younger" comment is crap.  They'll tell a singer to sing younger, and, when the singer does, they'll say it was too young. ARGH!

Adam Lambert, "Satisfaction" (Rolling Stones)

You've got to be kidding me. Adam strikes me as the David Cook wannabe of the season.  $10 bucks Simon says it's karaoke. Sounds screechy to me. Paula loves him, which proves she's deaf.  Simon says parts were excruciatingly bad and parts brilliant.  Randy compares him to Steven Tyler, which proves he's deaf.  Blech :-P

Okay, here are my predictions:

Top girl: Allison Iraheta
Top guy: Adam Lambert - although I wouldn't vote for him
Highest vote getter of the rest: Kris Allen - although I fear it will be Nick/Norman
